The problem is that many of us store these ideas “in a drawer” and forget about them until we read about a successful company that...does exactly what you thought up a few months or years back. Have you ever tried to think about why you're actually doing it? Why are you afraid to let your own idea out of the bowels of your head and into reality? How can you know it's not an idea that will sustain you for the rest of your life? How can you know that it won't be the next Amazon, Google or another Slovak hit like sli.do or Sygic? (Yes, they are both from Slovakia.)
Startup Weekend is one weekend, 54 hours to be precise, during which you can look at the world differently. It's a chance to open your “drawer”, pull out the best idea and work on it. We'll give you everything you need to do it, even if all you really need is to stop looking for excuses.
We can't help you with excuses, you'll have to figure that out on your own...
But we can help you with that:
Mentors
Experienced entrepreneurs, developers, marketing experts, freelancers and investors will accompany you during the weekend. We are trying to assemble a group of people who will be able to answer all your questions, overcome all your barriers and help you to move your scrapbook idea closer to a real product or startup in 54 hours. We'll gradually introduce them on our website and Facebook page.
Same people as you
One of the reasons we sometimes fear our own idea is our surroundings. Steve Jobs was considered a weirdo in the beginning, too. Imagine for one weekend being surrounded by people who think just like you. People who are bursting with ideas and looking for even the smallest room to innovate, or people with a passion for entrepreneurship. In fact, the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing because you get to be yourself.
Investors
Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and half of Sunday don't get too involved. Your job is, first and foremost, to research the problem that is troubling your potential customers and that you are trying to solve with your idea. Focus on what your customers need and what can catch on in the market. Don't think too much about what investors want to hear. They are most interested in the potential your idea has, and that depends on how well you understand your customers.
Food, Coffee, Relax
You don't have to worry about anything all weekend, just work. The rest is up to us - internet, food, drink, coffee and even space for a short rest and relaxation. Just everything you need not to die while working, we'll give you! You'll even get a t-shirt and some of those presents!
First Step
This is the last thing we can help you with. We'll give you a place to start, a chance to get to know more people like you, a chance to meet interesting and experienced professionals, and also a chance to pitch your idea to investors in Sunday's finals. But it's still just a SPACE for the step YOU have to take.
Would you rather keep looking for reasons to keep your ideas in a drawer, or try to finally unpack it?
